2009-10 Viking Hockey - Pride, Passion, Purpose
Individual Efforts Recognized at Senior Banquet
The 2009-2010 Lawrence Viking Hockey season had many exciting moments and numerous great individual efforts. Those efforts were recognized on Saturday, April 17th, at the annual LU Hockey "Senior Banquet." The night also represented closure on the intercollegiate careers of the five graduating Viking Hockey seniors - Mike Ackley, Marc Howe, Jon Sacks, Billy Siers, and Masa Takahashi. 98 friends, family, and fans attended the event that took place at the Warch Campus Center on the campus of Lawrence University.
The Viking Hockey statistical awards were earned by two repeat-winners and one first-time recipient. Marc Howe (Senior) earned his second Leading Scorer Award and Matt Hughes (Sophomore) also was recognized for the second time as the Viking Hockey "Hitman of the Year." Jameson Raymond (Sophomore) finished the season as the Top +/- Award winner.
The Viking Hockey "Team Awards" were also presented. These awards tend to have significant meaning for Viking players because they are voted on by the players, coaching staff, and trainers. This year's winners were recognized as follows:
Most Valuable Player: Marc Howe (Senior)
Most Dedicated Player: Mike Ackley (Senior)
Unsung Hero Award: Mike Ackley (Senior)
Scholar Athlete Award: Jon Sacks (Senior)
Most Improved Player: Reijo Wahlin (Sophomore)
Freshman of the Year: Brad Scurfield (Freshman)
Besides looking back, the Vikings also took a look into the future when they named the captains for the 2010-2011 hockey season. Jonathon Sheridan (Senior next season) will take the responsibility of being named the team Captain. The Assistant Captains for the 2010-2011 season will be Corey Garrett (Senior next season) and Matt Hughes (Junior next season). All three individuals have earned the honor, and all three will certainly be capable of the leading Viking Hockey to the next level.
"We are extremely gratefeul for the contributions of our 2010 senior class," stated Head Coach Mike Szkodzinski. "They have truly represented what we envision Lawrence Hockey players to be both on and off the ice. We fully expect the returning players to take their example and build upon their efforts. The future is bright - and it is up to the returning guys to carry on the tradition that this group of seniors and those before them have established."
The Vikes open the 2010-2011 season on the road against UW-Stevens Point on October 25th. The players and coaches would like to thank all who have supported Viking Hockey not only this season ... but in past seasons as well and look forward to getting back on the ice!!!
